Chapter 14

Avery

“Four pairs of bowling shoes please,” I said to the young man working behind the counter at the bowling alley.

He wore a mustard and red striped polo shirt that matched those of his fellow employees and he moved with sloth-like speed to fetch the shoes I needed as I listed off sizes for him. While I waited I turned and rested my elbows on the high counter. Across the alley, Camden, Thad, and Amy were punching their names into the computers and pointing at the display over our lane. Camden stood back a bit with his hands in the pockets of his tan pants while Amy and Thad messed around with the controls.

Camden shot a glance in my direction and I gave him a thin smile.

While our dates came up with clever nicknames to replace our real names in the scoreboard, Camden came and joined me.

“Are you having a good time so far?” He took the two pairs of shoes that were for him and Amy down from the counter.

“I am. How about you?”

He nodded. “Amy is a really nice young woman.”

“She’s very pretty, too.”

“An added bonus.”

“Things do feel a bit… forced,” I admitted. There had been a couple of uncomfortable moments of awkward silence over dinner, and we’d all dallied a bit once we got inside the bowling alley trying to decide who would do what.

“We just need something to take the edge off.”

“Any ideas?”

Camden’s gaze wandered to the other side of the concession stand, where they served basic food like nachos, burgers, and hotdogs. They also sold pitchers of beer and horrible sangria, as well as hard liquor from the attached bar with its own outside entrance.

I arched an eyebrow at him. “Tequila?”

He grinned. “Tequila.”

We quickly dropped off the four pairs of shoes and walked over to the bar where Camden ordered us each a shot of tequila. There were no limes and definitely no salt, so we had to accept the burn and just throw it back. We tapped our shot glasses together before pouring the liquor down our throats. It warmed me up from the inside out and I could have sworn I felt it tingle in my fingertips.

I dragged the back of my hand across my mouth. “I can’t remember the last time I shot tequila.”

“It’ll loosen us up a bit. Maybe we can let our hair down and really enjoy ourselves.”

I hoped he was right. I’d noticed a mild bit of tension between Camden and Thad at the dinner table and I really hoped it didn’t spread over into bowling. I wanted to have fun. I wanted to be silly, too. And what better time than at bowling?

We made our way back over to our lane where Amy and Thad had finished inputting our names and had already bowled their first rounds. Thad pointed out how well he was doing already, and I told him to hold his horses because there was still plenty of game left and I didn’t intend to let him win.
